Lord Vishwakarma was the only architect who was imbued with all the qualities of Fine Art. According to mythology it is Vishwakarma who created the entire universe, as well as the heaven and the earth. And the official architect of all the gods' palaces. He is also credited for creating the missiles used in the mythological era, including the Vajra the sacred weapon of Lord Indra, from the bones of sage Dadhichi. He is regarded as the supreme worker, the very essence of excellence and quality in craftsmanship.
He is visualized as the Ultimate reality in the Rig Veda. From whose navel all visible things emanate. His daughter Sanjana was married to the Sun-God; he is also chief architect and built of lanka, Dwarka and Yampuri.
Vishwakarma also supposed to have built Dwarka, the capital of God Krishna. During the time of the Mahabharata, Shree Krishna is said to have lived in Dwarka, and made it his Karma Bhoomi or center of functioning. That is why this place in western India has become a well known pilgrimage for the Hindus.
Vishwakarma is known as the god of architects. As a mark of reverence he is not only worshipped by the engineering and architects community but also by all professionals. It is customary for craftsmen to Carpenters, Goldsmiths, Blacksmiths, Masons and all those people who are skilled in the crafts.
Everything in this world we see like big dams, the reservoirs, bridges, skyscrapers, airplanes and all mechanics & engineers around which our life revolves are the product of Hammer and Chisel, which represent Shree Vishwakarma.
Lord Vishwakarma is as great as Lord BRAHMA, VISHNU, MAHESH because all our scriptures concerned with Hindu religion contains episodes of his glorious contributions.
He is also the blueprint of all the flying chariots of the gods, and all their weapons.

There is a long and interesting story behind this. Vishvakarma created five Brahmas/prajapathies - from his five faces. They were Manu the blacksmith, Maya the carpenter, Twosta the metal craftsmen, Silpy the Stonecarver & Sculptors and Viswajna the goldsmith That's why we are called "Panchals"
